Garden Update

We embarked this Spring on a serious backyard makeover! Part of it involved new garden raised beds and an attempt to grow a variety of vegetables and flowers. With little official gardening knowledge, we planted a wide array of vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, onions, asparagus, green beans, carrots, cucumbers, okra, scallions and strawberries. We even added some herbs: basil, chives, and parsley. In the past years, we've had great luck with herbs in containers and have a variety of herbs on our deck by the kitchen - basil, thyme, rosemary, sage, and oregano. So, I thought in the honor of the summer like weather, I would update you on the progress of our garden!

The tomatoes are growing like weeds and finally starting to produce some fruit, although we only have 1 tomato right now ready for picking. The peppers are slower moving, although we have 1 green and 1 yellow banana pepper growing. We have a few strawberries in the works and the green beans are just starting to flower. The basil took a little hit with the hot and then cold and then hot weather at the beginning of the season, but it is finally starting to come back. The asparagus and carrots are the biggest disappointments so far, but there is still time!

We started 1 bed with flowers from seeds and they just didn't really take. So, yesterday I broke down and bought some beautiful flowers from the nursery down the block. It now truly looks like a flower bed!

We hope that you enjoy the updated garden pics below. And, just for a frame of reference, I put in some pictures of the garden beds at the beginning of spring. So, now you can see how far they have come!
